Differences between Contemporary and Classic Wedding Invitations by Lisa Parker3
While deciding between contemporary and classical wedding invitations may not seem like a priority, invitations often set the expectations of guests for the type of ceremony that is going to take place. For this reason, knowing the differences between modern or contemporary invitations and their classical counterparts is very important. Here are some of the main differences to keep in mind.
Classical or traditional wedding invitations are still considered proper when the wedding is going to be a formal affair. The invitations are usually printed on linen paper and they make use of elegant but legible script for the text. In general, the look and feel of the invitation is considered to be refined and demonstrate a strong appreciation for long-standing traditions associated with wedding planning.
In terms of variety, classical styles do allow for some variance on the basic traditional invitation. Instead of going with white linen paper for the invitation, a slightly different approach would be to utilize ecru line paper embossed with some type of elegant script in black. To add a little color to white linen invitations, the text may be printed using a blue ink instead of black. Classical designs also include the addition of gold or silver elements near the text. Illustrations such as flowers or ribbons may be simple pen and ink reproductions or even pastels that almost blend into the background.
The text for a traditional or contemporary invitation will be simple and direct. Beginning with the names of the bride’s parents, the text goes on to include the name of the bride and the groom, followed by the date, time, and location for the ceremony. Other elements such as a reference to a reception to follow may be included, but is not required.
By contrast, contemporary invitations come in all sizes, shapes, colors, and designs. A modern or contemporary approach is usually appropriate when the wedding is envisioned to be anything but a formal affair. An invitation of this type would be ideal for casual nuptials at the beach, an informal backyard wedding, or weddings built around a particular theme, such as the Wild West.
Contemporary invitations still include the essentials that let people know what is happening, who is involved, when the event takes place, and what time to show up. Outside of that, they tend to bear little resemblance to a classical invitation.
One of the differences with a contemporary approach is that the shape is not limited to the traditional rectangular design. Contemporary designs may use paper cut into triangles, circles or any other shape that the couple chooses. For example, a country and western wedding may call for invitations in the shape of a pistol or shotgun. Beach weddings may go with a beach ball shaped invitation or possibly an invitation in the shape of a dolphin. The shape of the invitation is limited only by the imagination of the wedding planner and the couple.
Color schemes for a contemporary invitation are also very different from classical designs. The paper may be any color or combination of colors. The font size and type can be uniform or the announcement may employ several different fonts for the text. It is also perfectly acceptable for a rainbow of colors to be used for the text as well. For the most part, a contemporary invitation is intended to reflect the personalities of those who are about to be married, conveying the fact they plan to have a lot of fun with their big day.
Pictures and graphics are also common with a contemporary invitation. The pictures may be candid shots of the bride and groom, or a picture of the couple taken especially for the invitation. In terms of graphics, everything from cartoons to caricatures can be used to decorate the invitation. As with the shape of the paper, a contemporary design allows the inclusion of images that may also provide the guest with a sense of how the ceremony is going to be structured. Cowboy hats and spurs indicate the ceremony is of a western theme, while sandcastles and beach balls indicate a seaside ceremony.
In the end, either type of invitation serves its purpose, provided the necessary information about who, what, and where is included. Beyond that, couples should allow the type of wedding they envision guide the selection and creation of the wedding invitations. The true test of the final selection really has more to do with the personal preferences of the bridge and groom. As long as the final design is something that the couple can look at in later years and still appreciate, the invitation can be considered appropriate. Modern wedding invitations can include any theme whereas contemporary invitations are more simplistic. The contemporary styles usually consist of a few basic colors to provide the guests with a sense of what to expect at the celebration.
